Seven for Saturday - 7 James Moody Videos
"Seven for Saturday" is a great way to see some of the legendary men and women of jazz in action.
I've known for a few weeks that saxophonist James Moody has pancreatic cancer. This news saddens me more than usual because he is the first living legend that I've ever met. There's a personal connection for me now, no matter how brief the encounter was. I remember instantly where I met him (Washington, DC's Blues Alley in 2006), what was going on, who I was with and how the interaction was (fantastic!).
His wife, Linda Moody, posted this open letter to everyone on his website earlier this month (Nov 2010):
Dear Friends:
Some of you know that Moody has been ill for quite sometime. It has been his decision not to talk about it, but now he wants you to know that he has Pancreatic Cancer. He was operated on last February 28th to have the tumor resected, but it proved to be impossible without endangering his life. The world renowned Dr. Babs Moossa removed his gallbladder and did a double bypass of his digestive system to remove the blockage. He was in the ICU at UCSD Thornton Hospital for almost 8 weeks with life threatening infections and was finally able to come home in May. With the help and loving care from Moody's cardiologist, Dr. Jerome Robinson and his wife, Pam, we have had a wonderful support system. They have become like part of our family. Dr. Charles Kossman, his oncologist, has been so helpful and supportive of Moody's decision not to have any chemo or radiation.
We are so happy to have the best medical care in the country and be able to stay at home where Moody is happiest. The doctors say that this is the reason why he has done so well for so long. He has an amazing determination as many of you know. His strong will, his music, and our infinite love for each other keep him going.
We have received many cards and e-mails expressing love and good wishes for Moody and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Some have been in the form of Salutes and Tributes. Moody and I want to thank you all; the musicians, and the presenters and, of course, the audiences that turned out in spite of the fact that Moody could not be there in person (though always in spirit!!)
If Moody has touched your life in some way please feel free to write him a card, letter or e-mail. Because I am very busy as his caregiver I can't always return telephone calls. I know that you understand.
Thank you for all of your love and support of my precious husband.
Sincerely,
Linda Moody
Here is Mr. Moody singing his signature song "Moody's Mood For Love" with the Dizzy Gillespie-led United Nations Orchestra in 1989.
Mrs. Camille Cosby (comedian/jazz aficionado Bill Cosby's wife) gets the background story from Moody about how "Moody's Mood For Love" came about:
Have you seen Mr. Moody perform over the years? Did any of you see him perform with Dizzy? Please share your thoughts, memories and good times here.
Thank you.
