Charles Mingus Jazz Documentary: "Mingus On Mingus" ~ Kickstarter Project!

Hi everyone! It's been a while since I brought a Kickstarter.com fundraiser to your attention. Today I want to let you know about Kevin Ellington Mingus' desire to put together a documentary about his intriguing relative, the one and only Charles Mingus.

Here are the details:

MINGUS ON MINGUS PROJECT

The feature-length documentary is the journey of a grandson searching for the truth behind the legend of the grandfather he never knew. Surrounded by controversy for his polemic actions and his unpredictability, the enigmatic figure of his grandfather became a jazz icon. The documentary opens doors to unknown facets of a composer who left one of the largest musical legacies of 20th Century American music. It is the path of his grandson, looking at the life of his grandfather through the eyes of those he touched and inspired, and through the locations where he lived and composed his art. The film rediscovers both, the man and the artist: Charles Mingus.

There are many perspectives of my grandfather that have not had a place in defining his legacy… I am seeking them out to understand him beyond myth, fable or a singular vision of his work.                                                                                                                                                       – Kevin Ellington Mingus, Director

WE NEED YOUR HELP

Taking their memories with them, the generation that changed the direction of jazz forever is nearly gone. Those who are still here are a reminder of this collective music, which carries the pain and glory of our history. We have a commitment to them to capture those moments and give them a voice and a place. These musicians fought to develop their art in a society full of discrimination and an industry, which saw them as a commodity. Many of them unrecognized belong to a community essential to the art form of jazz.

This is a project focused on people who struggled to create and control their work independently. Following our own path to produce a film by traditional funding methods has been challenging. Until now our project has been fully self-funded and its financial independence will allow us to create a documentary faithful to the spirit of jazz.

FINANCIAL GOAL

Our goal of $45,000 will allow us to continue into the next stage of filming, planned for winter 2011 and spring 2012.

Funds received will be applied to conducting additional interviews in the United States, Mexico and Europe, equipment rental, on-location camera operators, editing fees, and archival research and usage fees.

ALL OR NOTHING

If we don't reach our goal, no amount is collected.  Pledges are only billed when the goal is met and the campaign has ended. Help us spread the word!
