World Wide Wednesday: Bassist Avishai Cohen

Today I'm going to tell you a little about an Israeli-born musician named Avishai Cohen. Once again, YouTube was instrumental in helping me discover Avishai's creativity as a composer, vocalist and bassist. 

Who is Avishai Cohen?

"Avishai Cohen speaks as a citizen of the world. He’s a street-wise player, born in Israel and raised in St. Louis, MO who learned to hold his own in Greenwich Village jazz clubs and Latin joints in the Bronx.

In 1996, his brash and confident playing style landed him one of the most coveted gigs in jazz—the bass chair with Chick Corea. Since leaving Corea’s band in 2003, Cohen has consistently danced on the bridge between contemporary jazz and world music..."

JAM 2010: 156 Artists for a New Jazz Experience (Part I)

There are hundreds and hundreds of jazz musicians & singers around - creating, touring, enriching people's lives with their music.

My contribution to the celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month is this ongoing list. It was made during a couple of sessions of free association. I thought of one artist which made me think of someone else. 

It is my hope that everyone will be able to find an artist, a style, a video or a backstory that resonates with them.
